Why am I being asked for a product key when installing EndNote 20?

Answer

If you are being asked for a product (which you shouldn't be!), the likely culprit is the file extraction step. Follow these install instructions closely:

PC

  1. Close Word before beginning.
  2. Click on the file: "EN20Install.zip" and select "Save". Be sure to note where it is saved (usually "Downloads").
  3. Open the folder where the file is saved, then Right-click on the file and choose "unzip" or "extract". You must UNZIP or EXTRACT the files for the install to work
  4. Once the files unzip, open the "EN20Install" folder and double-click on the "EN20Inst.msi" file to begin installation.
  5. Follow the prompts to complete the typical installation.
  6. Close the unzip window, if necessary. You can delete the EN20Install.zip after the installation is complete.
  7. Open EndNote from the Start>Programs menu first. Then open a library. Last open Word. This will allow all the Cite While You Write components to install properly.

Mac

  1. Open the "EndNote20SiteInstaller.dmg” file.
  2. Double-click the "Install EndNote 20" image.
  3. This will bring up an image with "Licensed to: SCRIPPS RESEARCH"
  4. Click Install. Note: This may take some time to complete.
  5. This will launch the EndNote 20 application with options to customize the installation.
  6. Click through these screens to complete the installation. You should not be prompted for a Product Key.
