What is an embargo period and what should I set it to in NIHMS?

An embargo period is The embargo is the time period, in months, that the publisher retains exclusive rights to distribute the article. The full text of an article will not be made available in PMC, even if the PMC-ready documents have been approved by the Reviewer, until after the embargo has ended. Assignment of a PMCID is not dependent on the embargo.

For NIH funded publications, 1 year is the maximum embargo period, and many journals enforce that. It's best to check with the journal directly when setting the embargo period.

Open access journals make content available immediately in most cases. Learn more about open access publishing here.
